Since 2004, cheerleading teams from across the nation have come together in Orlando at the end of a long, grueling season of competing in hopes of being crowned Cheerleading World Champions. During this competition, thousands of fans come to watch the best of the best and to see who gets crowned champion of the world. Young athletes in the sport have opportunities to meet who they aspire to be like in the cheer world. As a coach, over and over again, I hear about how my athletes want to meet Gabi Butler, cheerleader for SMOED. As a two-time world champion, Gabi has captured the hearts of cheerleaders across the nation and globe. This past week, Lakeland, Florida Cheerleading gym CFA (Central Florida Athletics) was honored to host Gabi Butler and Jack Kidney, member of Top Gun All-stars, as they conducted a cheer clinic.
The excitement and anticipation exhibited by the CFA athletes, as well as athletes from other gyms in the area, was one like no other. Approximately 70 athletes from all over the southeast waited for their moment to have Gabi and Jack sign their shirts and bows, as well as take pictures with their cheer idols. After an hour of photos and autographs, the world champions led a three hour cheer clinic which included conditioning, jumps, tumbling, and stunting.
At the conclusion of the clinic, though tired, the athletes left with a new drive to become the best athletes they can be. Gabi and Jack stressed the importance of teamwork and striving to help each other be better athletes. If nothing else, the cheerleaders returned to their gyms motivated to continue growing as individuals and cheerleaders. I can’t wait to have Lakeland’s CFA put on another clinic. I’m excited to see the new drive this clinic created and am anxious to see our athletes push themselves to the next level.
A big thanks to Gabi Butler and Jack Kidney for putting on such a great clinic. We look forward to more events like this at CFA, Lakeland, Florida’s cheerleading leader.
